Kanbis Sports Club who have already won the NPCA Super League title with one game in a hand beat Stray Lions by four wickets today(Sunday) at Eastleigh Secondary School Ground.
The match was umpired by Subhash Modi and David Odhiambo.
Stray Lions won the toss and elected to bat first and managed to score 171 all out in 44 overs thanks mainly to Paras Khetia 45, Peter Kituku 28 and Runish Gudka 28. Bowling honours were shared by Rikesh Hirani 5/35, Harish Varshani 2/25 and Rajesh Varshani 2/10.
Kanbis Scored the required runs - 174 for the loss of six wickets. Rakep Patel(85) and Alpesh Bhudia(50) put up a match winning and opening partnership of 130 runs. Jimmy Kamande was the most successful bowler for the visitors as he claimed four wickets for 48 runs and Sachin Kadelvear 2 wickets for 29 runs.

Batting first after being sent in on a green pitch, Kongonis put up a very defendable total of 233 with Baden Powell making his maiden half century, and Chris Childs also chipping in with a half century of his own. Skipper Paul Marshall added a valuable 46.

In reply, Ruaraka got off to a flying start, before the introduction of Suji into the Kongonis attack, picking up a triple wicket maiden at one stage. This over pretty much put the result beyond doubt as Kongonis cruised home by a final margin of 55 runs as Ruaraka were dismissed for 178.

Kanbis have defeated Nairobi Gymkhana to remain undefeated with only 2 rounds to go in the Super League. Batting first, Gymkhana were bowled out for 177 with Mishra top scoring with 40 and Karim adding a valuable 30. The wickets were shared amongst the Kanbis bowlers with Varsani, Elijah Otieno and R.Mepani taking 2 wickets each.

In reply, Kanbis got home with 2 wickets and 8 overs to spare, finishing on 178/8. Top scorers were A.Halai with 60 not out and A.Bhudia contributing a valuable 40. A great achievement from Kanbis to remain undefeated with only 2 rounds left.

Kennedy Otieno stars in Nookers win.

Kennedy Otieno played an impressive innings of 131 not out for Nookers XI yesterday against the hosts Simba Union in the ongoing NPCA Super league match which was officiated by Subhash Modi and Lalji Bhudia.

Nookers beat Simba Union by a single wicket in a nail biting finish in the last over and a ball remaining of the match.

Simba Union won the toss and elected to bat first and scored 221 for the loss of 7 wickets in 50 overs thanks to Nadeem Ahmed 45, Simarpreet Singh 33 and Maurice Odumbe 28. Aslam Raza was the top bowler for Nookers as he captured three wickets for 25 runs.

Nookers scored the required runs - 226 for nine wickets in 49.5 overs but Simba Union gave a very good fight. Captain of Nookers Kennedy Otieno played a fine innings of 131 not out and he was well supported by Collins Obuya 44. Bowling honours were shared by Gagandeep Singh 2/51 and Harshvadan Patel 2/37. The match was played in very good spirit.

Nairobi Gymkhana V Sir Ali Muslim Club Match report.

Nairobi Gymkhana beat Sir Ali Muslim Club by 123 runs in the NPCA Super League Match yesterday at Nairobi Gymkhana. The match was officiated by Subhash Modi and Rocky D'mello.
Thomas Odoyo scored a brilliant century (100) and he was well supported by Prashant Srinivas 23, Irfan Karim 20 and Brijal Patel 20. Nairobi Gymkhana were all out for 240 runs in 46.3 overs. Hamza Syal 4 wickets for 34 runs and Jibran Butt 4 wickets for 38 runs bowled well for SAMC.
SAMC were bowled out for 117 runs. Farnaz Butt 24 and Jibran Butt 19 were the top scorers. Prashant Srinivas 4 wickets for 22 runs, Nemiah Odhiambo 2 wickets for 18 runs and Raj Savla 2 wickets for 18 runs were succcessful bowlers for the home team. Irfan Karim(wicketkeeper) was brilliant behind the stumps .

Seren Waters has continued his recent run of good form making 129 for Surrey 2nd XI against MCC YC this week. This followed his score of 82 in Surrey 2nd XI's previous 3 day match against Hampshire 2nd XI and a quickfire 51 not out in the match against Worcestershire 2nd XI.

Ragheb Aga made a rare appearance for Sussex 1sts in the County Championship playing against Leicestershire but went wicketless and made a duck with the bat. He also played for Sussex 2nd XI against Middlesex 2nd XI last week making scores of 37 and 2 not out and took a wicket in each innings.

Peter Ongondo has been playing for Chesham Cricket Club in his most recent match taking a wicket and blasting 16 not out off 9 balls. Ongondo has had a good season taking 33 wickets at 28.16 and also making some handy late order contributions with the bat.

Cricket Kenya Press release on cancelled tour

RE: CANCELLATION OF KENYA TEAM TOUR TO EUROPE

Cricket Kenya is disappointed to inform members of the media that the Kenya cricket team have failed to agree to the terms of the new contract offered to them. As a consequence, they have refused to honour the team’s tour to England due to depart tomorrow, 19th June 2010, where they were due to play three warm-up matches against local sides, in preparation for the World Cricket League Div 1 in Holland. This tour has had to be cancelled.

It is necessary to set out the background to this matter.

The team squad’s annual contracts expired on 31st May 2010 and a new draft contract incorporating materially identical provisions as the previous contracts was submitted to the captain on 2nd June 2010 for approval and signature. All players were offered a 10% increment to their previous retainers under the new contract.

Cricket Kenya held a meeting on Monday 14th June 2010 - at the request of the players - to discuss their new contracts. This meeting was attended by the Captain and the Vice Captain of the national team - accompanied by a group of four persons who identified themselves as “the players representatives”, namely Maurice Odumbe, Steve Tikolo, Kennedy Obuya and Isaiah Odhiambo claiming they had exclusive authority to deal with team affairs.

At this meeting on 14th June, for the first time, various demands were made by these “representatives” involving radical changes to the structure of the contract – including huge increases to players’ remuneration. Various other complaints unrelated to the contract - including a complaint against the behaviour of the Chairman of Selectors - were deferred.

The meeting satisfactorily resolved a number of issues. There were other matters which could not be immediately resolved and which required further consultation. It was specifically agreed and accepted that these items did not impact in any way on the tour which would go ahead unhindered. The players’ retainers, match fees and allowances would be honoured under the proposed new contract notwithstanding these outstanding issues.

Two days later, on 16th June 2010, without any consultation, the “players’ representatives”, claiming to act on behalf of the national team, called a press conference at which they publicly accused Cricket Kenya of failing to look after the national team players, claimed that the Cricket Kenya Board was corrupt and demanded the immediate sacking of the entire Board, selectors’ panel and the national coach. They further insisted that unless the players were given what they wanted in a new contract they would not travel on the European tour.

The player representatives concerned had no authority whatsoever to go public in this way. They are neither accredited formally by the players nor are they part of a properly registered players association. Their sole function was to negotiate terms with Cricket Kenya on behalf of the players. The players’ contracts specifically forbid any player from engaging with the press and to criticize the national board. It is plain that their real motive was intended solely to undermine and embarrass Cricket Kenya.

Cricket Kenya regards this conduct by these “players’ representatives” as outrageous and disgraceful. Having regard to the gratuitously offensive nature of the allegations made and the questionable agenda of the former players involved, the Cricket Kenya Board unanimously resolved not to engage with these “player representatives” any further.

On 17th June 2010, a revised draft contract, which included the points resolved at the 14th June meeting, together with a note setting out the outstanding issues to be resolved was submitted to the team for signature.

On 18th June 2010, the players, through the national captain, insisted that they would only agree to sign contracts and travel to England if their grievances were addressed by the Board in consultation with the players’ representatives first. The Board declined to meet with these representatives but stressed it was ready to meet with the national team players. This offer was refused by the captain who insisted that any such meeting would have to be with the players’ representatives.

Since no agreement could be reached, the tour was accordingly cancelled.

The ramifications of this are likely to be very damaging indeed. Friends of Kenya Cricket have expressed their anger at being let down at the last minute in this fashion by a national team of a country they have continuously supported and, on their previous tour in 2008 paid for, at their own cost. The town of Rochdale had agreed to host several functions for the Kenya team involving the mayor and other senior dignitaries. Several international players were expected to play in, and a number of Kenyan supporters were expected to attend, the games arranged for this tour.

Cricket Kenya estimates a loss of some US$40-50,000 in terms of airfares, accommodation, catering arrangements and match expenses for this aborted tour. This funding forms part of the ICC’s High Performance Grant to Kenya which is dedicated to national team fixtures.

Kenya’s participation in the World Cricket League is also in jeopardy as is its preparation for the World Cup – particularly against any international opposition. The team’s conduct in this matter coupled with its poor showing in recent matches on the international scene is certain to scupper current sponsorship negotiations.

Cricket Kenya stands by its decision and is determined not to be held to ransom by the national team – or by its so-called “representatives”- in this way. It also wishes to point out that the Kenya national team is better remunerated than any other team sport in Kenya.

Unacceptable behaviour

Kenya cricket once again takes a major step backwards. There should be no place in a struggling sport for blackmail, yet this is exactly what the recent actions of the 4 'player representatives' amounts to. Because of this short sighted and ill-timed action, the Kenya team lose not only the chance to warm up properly before an absolutely crucial world Cup qualifier series but also many of the few fans they have. This action shows total disrespect not only to Cricket Kenya who are after all mandated to run the sport but to those fans and well sishers who have gone to so much trouble to accomodate the team.

In regards to money - Kenya cricketers are already well paid. According to cricinfo, the monthly salary of the players ranges from $800 to $1500 per month. I bet there are plenty of other team sports in Kenya who would be very gratelful for that reimbursement. Then there is the factor of what pay is deserved for what performance. So far the team have failed to qualify for 2 consecutive 20-20 World Cups, scraped through the 50 over qualifier and are by no means assured of getting a decent result in the coming event. Results on the field have been patchy at best and certainly would not justify a raise in any other profession.

Then there is the cost of this action. Financially, Cricket Kenya lose $40-$50 000 that was due to paid in airfares, accomodation etc. Goodwill towards the team from benefactors such as Friends of Kenya Cricket must have all but evaporated - something that will have ramifications on future tours and fund raising initiatives. Credebility of Kenya on the international stage has been further tarnished and that will just discourage other, especially Test nations, from playing us. Such fixtures are where the team gets its pay and experience.

I have proposed before that a proper Players Association be formed. This has not been done and therefore it must be noted that the current 'representatives' can not justifiably claim to represent Kenya's players as a whole. Do they even represent all the current squad? Forming such an Association must be done as a matter of utmost urgency, if only to avoid debacles such as this in the future.

Finally a thought about who this action was meant to benefit. Not the majority of players in the country: there is only a fixed budget available to cricket Kenya and the more that is paid to an elite few, deserving or not, the less that is left for development and improving the situation for the majority. It is tough enough supporting Kenya in cricket with the results on the field, behaviour like this makes one wonder if it is really worth it at all...

Swamibapa 40 overs Champs

Swamibapa A Team under the captainship of Joseph Angara won the Bag and Balers Trophy to-day at Nairobi Gymkhana when they beat their arch rivals Kanbis A by 37 runs in front of a good crowd. The incident free match was officiated by Kenya International Cricket Umpires Subhash Modi and Rockie D'mello.
Scores:1 Swamibapa 113 all out in 33.5 overs . Francis Otieno man of he match batted well for his fine innings of 38 runs and he was supported by Nemiah Odhiambo 20. Bowling honours for Kanbis were shared by Rajesh Varsani 3/17 and Rajesh Bhudia 2/16.
Kanbis were bowled out for 76 runs in 24 overs. Alpesh Bhudia played an entertaining inings of 30 runs and he was ably supported by Rickesh Hirani14.
Joseph Angara 3/9, Lameck Onyango 3/13, Eliza Otieno 2/18 and Nemiah Odhiambo 2/16 spearheaded the bowling attack for Swamibapa. Maurice Ouma, Kenya Captain was brilliant behind the stumps as an agile wicketkeeper.
During the colourful presentation ceremony at Nairobi Gymkhana, NPCA Chairman thanked he main sponsors Bag and Balers for the tremendous support.
Samir Inamdar, Chairman of Cricket Kenya Cricket appreciated the role of NPCA and also assured Kenya Cricket is going o greater heights. The ceremony was also attended by the officials of Cricket Kenya, NPCA, KCU&SA and representatives of most of the NPCA affiliated clubs.

Kenya team for WCL Div 1 Announced

Cricket Kenya wishes to inform members of the press that the National Cricket Team will participate in the ICC World Cricket League Division 1 which will be held in The Netherlands from 1st – 10th July 2010.

Prior to that, the team will travel to Manchester in the United Kingdom to play in a series of warm matches which have been arranged by Friends of Kenya.

Tom Sears is the new CEO of Cricket Kenya

Cricket Kenya is pleased to announce that it has agreed terms with Mr Tom Sears to take over the vacant position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Cricket Kenya.

The panel of selectors for the new CEO included the office bearers of Cricket Kenya, the chairmen of the 3 provinces, Richard Done of ICC and Cassim Suliman (CEO of Africa Cricket Association).

Tom Sears is currently the Head of Business Development of New Zealand Cricket. He was formerly Chief Executive Officer of Derbyshire CCC (2005 -2008) and before that the Commercial Director of Worcestershire CCC (2000-2005). In terms of experience, he was in the eyes of the panel the most ideally suited candidate to take on this job given the breadth of his commercial and administrative experience and the reports received from those who have worked with him. The panel is confident that with his background and skills, Kenya’s cricket development will be in very capable hands.

Mr Sears, who is 40 years old, is of English extraction. He is married with three children.

He will accompany Mr Inamdar as one of Kenya’s two delegates to the ICC’s Annual Conference in Singapore (26th June – 1st July 2010) before commencing his duties in Kenya on 19th July 2010.

Action moves to SCLPS for 6-a-sides

Shree Cutchi Leva Patel Samaj (SCLPS) Youth League has organized and will be hosting a Six-A-Side Cricket tournament for the 5^TH Year. The Defending champions for the Last year were Swamibapa Sports Club, confirmed Subhash Modi, Hon. PRO of the tournament.

Modi said most of the top Kenyan cricketers are expected to participate in this exciting tournament.

The event will be taking place at SCLPS Nairobi West Complex and Ngara Sports Club from 1:30pm on Saturday 29^THMay & 8:00 am to 6: pm on Sunday 30^TH May & 1^ST June 2010. There will be a road show by East FM on 30^TH May 2010, Vegetarian food varieties will be available for all three days at very reasonable rates.

All teams associated with the Nairobi Province Cricket Association are invited and are expected to take part in the three day cricket event. We have already received confirmation for participation from a number of institutes namely: Shree Cutchi Leva Patel Youth League, Ruaraka Sports Club, Kanbis Sports Club,, Parklands Sports Club, Aga Khan sports club, Swamibapa Sports Club, Kongoni’s Cricket Club, Premier club, Stray lions Cricket Club, Simba Union, Qutbi’s Cricket and a number of confirmations are still awaited

Cricket Kenya have organized a Mini Cricket Tournament which will feature schools from Nairobi Province on Saturday 27^th March 2010 at Ruaraka Sports Club starting at 9:00am and ending at 5:00pm.

It will be a fun filled event that will have the participation of 27 teams (16 boys’ teams and 11 girls’ teams). The boys’ event will be divided into four pools out of which the top team will proceed to the semi finals. The girls’ event on the other hand will be divided into three pools with the top team in each pool and the overall best runner up to contest in the semi finals..

SCLPS clearly showed their dominance in the development stakes as both A and B teams took out their respective finals, while St Marys were the third victorious side. The number of new names to followers of Kenyan cricket should be as exciting as it must be daunting for the incumbents in the national age group sides. Perhaps if events like this were run before regional age group finals, Kenya would field stronger sides...

17 schools had participated in the tournament and the finals concluded on Saturday 20^th March 2010. The occasion was graced by most of the schools, NPCA committee headed by our Chairman, Kenyan Cricket team with the coach, the school organizing committee and all the Development Officers from Cricket Kenya and Supporters. Prize giving was done in the afternoon and each and every participant in this league was issued a certificate.

NPCA Secondary Schools Finals this weekend

Early this year, the NPCA revived the secondary school’s league in the city, in pursuit of one of the NPCA’s primary goals i.e. spreading of the cricket game.

The league has been running since 23rd January 2010 and on Saturday, 20th March 2010 from 9.00 am it will reach its climax. 3 finals are set for: Simba Union Club for Pool C and Nairobi Gymkhana Sports Club for Pool A and B.

The Awards Ceremony will take place after the A & B finals at Nairobi Gymkhana, in the afternoon.

While it is great to see this initiative back up and running again, it also saddens me that it it yet another instance of poor PR by the administration. This is the first we have been told of this event. Had we had earlier notification we could have followed the fortunes of Kenya's up and coming cricketers throughout the tournament.

It is high time Kenyan cricket pulled itself out of the dark ages and started giving its players the coverage they deserve and that the game needs it if is to become anything further than a niche sport in the country. We have not even been informed which teams will be taking part.

None the less, good luck to all involved and we hope to see more of these players featuring in the leagues in the near future.

RIP Muslim Kanji

It is regret that we learn of the passing of ex Kenyan International Muslim Kanji who passed away in London two days ago.

Muslim was a former Kenya Cricketer and was a fine and agile wicket-keeper and batsman. He will be sadly missed by all those who knew him well. Our thoughts and condolances go to his family in this sad time. Rest in peace.
